Project description

As a result of insuficient oxygen delivery (hypoxia), tumor cells start an addaptation machinery, which leads to activation of hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) and in consequence expression of carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX). Our role is to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying expression of both hypoxia-induced CA IX and DNA-damage induced p53 upon different stresses.

CA IX is a metalloenzyme involved in regulation of cellular pH by reversible conversion of CO2 to bicarbonate and proton. It is know that CA IX promotes tumor growth and survival as well as serves as a negative prognostic factor in various types of cancers. p53 is a well-established transcriptional factor playing a crucial role in response to DNA damage, cell cycle control, apoptosis and senescence.

Additionaly, we would like to characterize new markers, which could help in early-stage cancer detection and setting individual patient's treatment.
